There is a great wandering of the people of God, a wandering of faith and commitment, a wandering from the true foundations and the Word of God. It is a great wandering from the old paths onto a new way and a new road that seems to fulfill the desires of the flesh but only leaves you wanting more and more.
Proverbs 4:19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
Mankind has now wandered to the point of not being satisfied with the gender that they were born as. The homosexual crowd has now pushed their agenda so far that now they want the same rights as everyone else. We now have the right to choose what gender we want to be identified as, and our countries leader has backed the homosexual crowd up in this matter. Public schools can now lose their government funds if they don’t allow multi gendered restrooms.
The image of the rainbow no longer represents a time that God judged the world and destroyed all of mankind except for 8 people, but now the rainbow stands for a lifestyle of perversion without the gift of reproduction.
No reproduction means no mankind to survive and that’s exactly what Satan wants. He wants to destroy what God loves and has created to worship Him.
There is a wandering in the churches of God to seek after the ways of the world to bring in the worlds entertainment because the presence of God has departed. As it was in the days of Eli the High Priest so it is now Ichabod in many churches.
The Glory of God has departed because God will not compromise the sin in the church or in the lives of Christians.
Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
We must be confessing our sins daily in prayer and forsaking them. That means to leave them behind not to continue in them.
If we choose to continue in sin and make excuses to cover them up the Lord will not hear you when you call on Him. Now that’s not my opinion that’s what the Word of God says.
Psalms 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
Jesus was walking in Judaea and all kinds of people were walking with him and wandering round about Him and then one man walked up to Him and said:
Matthew 19:16-22 16 ¶ And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
The young man refused to lay the things of this life down and to pick up his cross and follow Jesus. He wandered off into the crowd just like many believers today.
We really don’t want to pick up our cross and follow the Lord.
We feel that we would be missing out on all of the good things of life. Like television shows, movies, video games, sports and entertainment, ect.
The things that we see with our eye’s and the tangible things that we can feel and touch are here and now and so we choose them over Jesus Christ.
Just like the man who came up to Jesus asking how to get eternal life, he believed in Jesus, and he had followed most of the rules but when it came to giving all he chose to wander off. He said no!
What does it mean to wander?
Wander – To deviate as from a path; to stray; specifically; to go astray, to morally; to err.
Wandering from the truth has always been the problem with God’s people.
We wander and another word for wandering is backsliding.
Back sliding is a term that is used for a person who once stood on the Word of God and allowed the Holy Ghost to convict them of their sins but through trials and tribulations of life slowly became hard hearted and ignored the conviction of the Holy Ghost.
You no longer feel conviction for the things that you know are morally wrong.
You cover up known sin in your life and make excuses and justify it because of your pride.
When you hear the truth spoken you despise it and mock it.
Through bitterness, anger and pride you justify yourself and refuse to have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to you.
There are 4 things that cause us to backslide and to wander
- I. Failure To Read The Bible
Biblical Instructions Before Leaving Earth
2Timothy 3:16-17 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
God’s Word will prove us wrong in our rebellion it will correct us in our errors, it will instruct us in our daily living.
Backsliding starts when we neglect to read God’s Word. It creates an entry point for the Devil to step in and to get control.
Go out on the streets today and ask people if they believe in God and the majority will say yes. Ask them was the last time they read the bible and most will say I’m not sure.
How can we know who God is and what he wants from us if we neglect to read His word? How can we claim to His promises and covenants if we neglect to follow Him?
Look at the state of our country and even the world because of neglecting God’s word.
God laid it all out for us in the book of Leviticus.
Leviticus 26:1-13 1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. 2 ¶ Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. 3 ¶ If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; 4 Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. 7 And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. 10 And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. 11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 13 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.
Take a look at the world now does it look like God’s blessing is upon it? Have we kept His covenants? Do we have peace and security? Have you noticed our monitored society? Have you noticed all of the bombings and shootings? Have you noticed the immoral decline in our society? Is the Church of Christ dominating all other religions in the world today?
God said if we would follow him and not submit to the things of the world that He would keep His hedge of protection upon us but let’s see what He says he will do if we neglect His Word.
Leviticus 26:14-17 14 ¶ But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; 15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: 16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.
God makes it clear that He doesn’t compromise and we as His people should not choose to compromise either.
It’s plain to see that our country and the world has chosen to disregard the commands of God and the state of the world is in the exact condition that the Lord said it would be in, if His Word was disregarded and despised.
If your not reading God’s Word then you really don’t know Him you just know of Him.
Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
If we call ourselves Christians then we need to be feeding on Jesus Christ.
If we’re feeding on the doctrines of the world and the praises of man then at the end of each day we will be left empty.
When we feed off of God’s Word it gives us life and fuels our flame.
God’s Word gives us:
- The Power of The Holy Ghost
God’s Word cleanses us by reading it daily.
Psalms 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psalms 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Reading God’s word daily is a requirement for everyone who calls themselves a follower of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 7:13-14 ¶ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Backsliding and wandering through the wide road that leads to destruction begins with the neglecting of reading God’s Word.
- II. Failure To Pray
James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
We have to pray and believe me I know it’s hard to pray with all the distractions of life. Your job, home life and many other things that worry us and steal our time away keep us from the one of the most important things that we have been gifted with, PRAYER to a God that listens!
1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
If your struggling in prayer and your constantly being distracted then press in and fight until you get through.
Remember when Daniel chose to fast and pray to God to seek out a matter. The Angel of the Lord said that there was a resistance that hindered him from responding but he made it through to answer Daniel’s prayer. The Disciples failed to pray in the garden of Gethsemane.
Matthew 26:36-46 36 ¶ Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
Jesus was saying pray, pray, pray and then it was to late no time to pray no time to change, no time to get right with God.
When we fail to read the Word of God and to seek Him daily in prayer then we our wandering in our own wills and leaving our selves open for the enemy to strike.
Proverbs 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.
- III. Failure To Attend Church
Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
We must come together as like minded believers because the hour is coming when the persecution will begin.
We come together to be edified by testimonies and witnesses of what the Lord is doing in our lives.
Jesus Christ is the head and we are the body that should be moving and plowing the fields of this world to be an effective witness and light that scatters the darkness that is coming in like a flood.
When the power of the Holy Ghost came down on the day of Pentecost they were all gathered together with one accord. They were in agreement, they were not wandering to and fro carelessly.
They were seeking God in His word and in prayer and together in unity not for the sake of the flesh but by submitting their wills to God’s will.
- IV. Failure To Praise God
When we fail to give God the praise and glory that He deserves then we are not honoring Him for what He has done. We are responding like an ungrateful spoiled child.
When you’re at the Wal-Mart or shopping store of your choice and you see a kid who is totally disrespectful to their parents by throwing a fit or sassing, that child is not honoring their parent and they are bringing shame on that parent by their choice of attitude.
There’s no difference when a Christian chooses to neglect God’s Word and to not seek Him in prayer, or to choose not to gather with His people and ultimately choose not to be thankful through giving praise or a testimony.
Proverbs 19:15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
